I found myself in the position to expedite my educational goals that I have been pursuing after being released from my position after a corporate buyout. Over the course of my career leading up to this point I have advanced my career by being willing to spend my personal time to become better at my position, challenging myself to take on more responsibility, and most importantly learning new skills. I seek to continue these things as I enjoy the challenge and learning new skills. I bring with me the knowledge gained from over 15 years as a manager working in multiple industries.

Projects
NASA NC Space Grant Research (2019)
The primary research objective of the 10-week summer project was to increase the accessibility of data products from Appalachian State University’s (APP) NASA Micro-pulsed Lidar Network (MPLNET) site to aerosol group members at APP. The MPLNET data from APP is uploaded every hour to the NASA MPLNET server, where it is processed and placed in NETCDF format. This format is very difficult for students and even most scientists who do not work regularly with NETCDF files to convert the data into an easily usable format. I applied my background in working with large data sets and worked with Dr. James Sherman to download the 3.25 years of APP MPLNET data; develop scripts to convert the NETCDF files into a tabled data format, with various options depending on the intended usage of the data; write custom software to analyze the APP MPLNET dataset, including seasonal and inter-annual variability; and place the vertical aerosol profiles in the format needed by the Santa Barbara DISORT radiative transfer code used to calculate direct aerosol effect on solar radiation.
In Depth
Key Knowledge
During my time at Appalachian I have pursued the statistics concentration in the mathematics department. Within this focus I have enjoyed classes ranging from calculus, differential equations, probability, and numerical methods. Many of my classes have a focus on statistics including statistical data analysis, statistical modeling, and mathematical statistics. From these I have learned a wide range of statistical distributions, how to understand, clean, model, and statistically analyze data. I have used these skills repeatedly throughout the program. While here at Appalachian I also have worked with Dr. James Sherman to help analyze and manipulate data from the Appalachian NASA MPLNet site. For the project I had to use both the skills I learned as a forecast analyst and demand planner and incorporate many of the skills I have learned here at Appalachian to complete this project.
To compliment my time in the professional world I have also minored in business. The experience that I have gained from several years working across several businesses has given me the insight that many students lack at graduation. This knowledge combined with the skills I have learned to statistically analyze data complement each other.
Expanding upon my professional experiences includes working independently, communicating effectively, and working with team members both on-site and in other time zones. One of the many complimentary skills that I bring from my years working it the ability to work with and coordinate teams. I have lead teams of over 50 and being able to utilize personal skills and emotional intelligence is a necessity to succeeding in any industry today. Given my levels of responsibility I worked mainly without supervision, with the agency of my goals driving me to succeed within the organization. I worked remotely, with my direct supervisor located in another state and members of my team also located remotely. I am comfortable with communication via professional emails, phone conferences, and other technology solutions including video conferencing, whiteboard sharing, and chat applications as methods of communication to further organizational objectives.
